InBody FAQ
The InBody test lasts approximately 45 seconds, and is followed by a short consultation to describe the data and answer questions.
The InBody test provides information on the following: your weight, body composition, your fat, your muscle, your hydration.
Body composition analysis is a method of breaking down your total body weight into its core components, primarily your skeletal muscle mass and fat mass. Unlike a standard scale that only provides your total weight, this analysis gives you a much deeper insight into what your body is actually made of.
The analysis provides a segmental fat analysis, which shows you the distribution of body fat across different segments of your body (e.g., arms, legs, trunk). By seeing the weight and percentage of fat in each area, you can effectively track where you are losing fat. It also measures your visceral fat level, the fat surrounding your internal organs, which is a key indicator of your metabolic health.
The test measures your skeletal muscle mass, not strength directly, but it provides the foundation for understanding your strength potential. It tells you exactly how many pounds of muscle you have in each arm and leg. This allows you to identify muscular imbalances and see which exercises are most effective at building muscle in specific areas.
The ECW/TBW ratio represents the ratio of Extracellular Water (ECW) to Total Body Water (TBW). This measurement is crucial for monitoring your body’s fluid balance. An elevated ratio can indicate water retention or edema. According to the analysis:
- A normal ratio is between 0.360 and 0.390.
- The ideal ratio is considered to be 0.380.
By providing an accurate measurement of your body-fat percentage and muscle mass, the InBody test gives you a clear and precise baseline. Instead of a vague goal like “lose weight,” you can set specific, measurable targets, such as “reduce body-fat percentage by 3%” or “gain 2 pounds of muscle in my legs.” This data-driven approach helps you create a more effective fitness and nutrition plan.
Your first test establishes your baseline. By taking the test periodically, you can move beyond guessing and see concrete data on your progress. It will show you if the weight you’re losing is fat (which is good) or muscle (which you want to avoid), and whether your workout plan is successfully building muscle mass. This makes it an invaluable tool for monitoring the effectiveness of your health and fitness journey.
For the most accurate and consistent results we suggest the following:
- Hydrate well the day before.
- Do not drink caffeine on the day of your test.
- Do not eat for 3-4 hours prior to testing.
- Do not exercise 6-12 hours prior to testing.
- Do not take InBody test immediately after a shower or sauna.
- Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours prior to testing.
- Ensure access to both feet with removable footwear (no socks or pantyhose).
- Avoid using lotion on hands or feet.
- For females, avoid testing if you are pregnant or menstruating.
- Individuals with pacemakers or other electronic medical devices should not take the InBody test.
Before a test, you should:
- Use the bathroom
- Maintain the same testing conditions as your first test
- Use an InBody tissue to wipe down electrodes (provided)
- Avoid eating or wait two hours after a meal
Avoid testing if before the test, you:
- Exercised strenuously
- Used a sauna, steam room, or bath
- Consumed diuretics such as caffeine, alcohol, and medication
- Have a fever, cold, or chill
For the InBody test to work correctly, the skin on the bottom of your feet must be in direct contact with the metal electrodes on the platform. The InBody test requires an unobstructed connection to get an accurate reading. Therefore, any items covering your feet, such as shoes, socks, stockings, or leggings, must be removed.
Your test results are a snapshot of your body’s current status, which can be influenced by several factors. For the most accurate and repeatable results, it is crucial to maintain consistent testing conditions. Factors that can affect your readings include:
- Hydration: Being dehydrated or over-hydrated can alter your results.
- Nutrition: Testing after a large meal can impact the readings.
- Medication: Certain medications may influence your body water levels.
- Illness: Your body composition can temporarily change when you are sick.
- Accessories: Metal accessories like jewelry or watches can interfere with the electrical conductivity.
To track your progress accurately, we recommend testing under similar conditions each time (e.g., same time of day, before exercising, before a meal).
While the InBody test is safe for most people, there are specific individuals who are not recommended to use the device.
Individuals with Medical Implants: People with artificial electrical implants, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator, should not take the test. The low-level electrical currents used by the InBody machine may interfere with the functionality of these life-sustaining medical devices.
Pregnant Women: Due to the constant and significant physiological fluctuations in body water and composition during pregnancy, the results would not be accurate or reliable. Therefore, we do not recommend the test for those who are pregnant.
Women on their Menstrual Cycle: For the most accurate results, it is best to avoid testing during your menstrual cycle. Hormonal changes can cause temporary shifts in body water levels and hydration, which may skew the readings.
